5. Challenges in MStar Recovery

5.1 UBI (Unsorted Block Images)

Modern Smart TVs often use UBIFS for the root filesystem. The MstarUpgrade.bin typically contains a UBI image. mstarupgradebin recovery

If you are building a custom recovery piece, follow these general steps:

  1. Unplug the device from power.
  2. Insert the USB drive into the USB port closest to the Ethernet or HDMI (port order matters).
  3. Locate the reset button – usually a small pinhole or a physical button labeled “Reset” or “Upgrade.”
  4. Press and hold the reset button.
  5. While holding, plug in the power.
  6. Keep holding the reset button for 10–15 seconds.
  7. Release. The screen may stay black for up to 30 seconds, then you’ll see “Updating firmware…” or a progress bar.
