A cold mist clung to the River Cam as dawn broke over the low hills of eastern Britannia. Soldiers of the Ninth Legion tramped along the Roman road, their sandaled feet sinking into the thawed earth. At the front marched Tribune Caius Aelius Varro, face mapped with a pilgrim’s fatigue and the faint scar of a spear thrust from two winters past. He carried not the brass of triumph but a folded letter from Rome: the Emperor demanded results. Britain had been a nest of rebellions, and the province’s loyalty frayed like old rope.
New additions for Roman Adventures Britons Season 3 include Lucien Msamati as a treacherous Gallic mercenary and Mackenzie Crook as a haunted veteran of the Ninth Legion.
The episode concludes with Varro and Rhosyn forging an uneasy alliance with Lycia and Marcellus; together they find the ledger that names several influential men, including one surprising entry: Governor Arruntius’s own steward.
Governor Arruntius presents himself in the forum, flanked by officers and merchants. He speaks of Roman order, prosperity, and the need for gradual assimilation. Varro, having gathered the ledger and witnesses, steps forward to denounce him. The governor counters with charm and the suggestion of greater unrest should Roman authority be suddenly undermined. The hearing becomes a duel of rhetoric.
