Pokémon HeartGold is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company. It was released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS handheld console. However, the game was not originally released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA), but rather for the DS.

To play these games, you cannot simply download a finished "GBA HeartGold" file from reputable sources due to copyright; instead, you use a legal "Base ROM" and apply a patch. Get a Base ROM: Usually Pokémon FireRed (U) or Pokémon Emerald (U) .

Method 2: The Physical Cartridge (Expensive)

  • Genuine copies of HeartGold and SoulSilver are notorious for being expensive. Due to the included Pokéwalker, loose cartridges cost $80–$120, and complete-in-box versions exceed $200.
  • Beware of Fakes: The GBA myth has fueled a secondary market of fake "GBA style" repro carts. These are usually buggy ROM hacks slapped on a cheap board. They will crash and delete your save file after the fourth gym.

What Are You Actually Downloading?

When you visit a ROM site claiming to offer "Heart Gold for GBA," you will typically find one of two things. Both are dangerous, but one is slightly more legitimate than the other.

Happy training, trainers.

These are fan-made and require a legal GBA BIOS and your own ROM dump of a base game (e.g., FireRed) to patch.

  1. A ROM of the actual DS game – That exists, but it requires a DS emulator (like DeSmuME or MelonDS), not a GBA emulator.
  2. A GBA rom hack – Some fan-made ROM hacks recreate Johto (or HeartGold's story) on GBA, such as Pokémon Liquid Crystal, Pokémon Shiny Gold, or Pokémon GS Chronicles. These are not official and are played on GBA emulators.
