What is December Sky?
December Sky (2016) is a film compilation of the first four episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, a web-original anime adaptation of Yasuo Ohtagaki’s manga. Unlike the main Universal Century timeline (which focuses on Amuro Ray and the White Base), Thunderbolt takes place in the "Thunderbolt Sector" – a shoal zone of destroyed colonies near Side 4. The film is standalone; you don't need to have seen other Gundam series to understand it.
- Timeline: It is set during the One Year War (Universal Century 0079), concurrently with the events of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam.
- Tone: Unlike many mainstream Gundam series, Thunderbolt is mature, gritty, and violent. It focuses on the psychological trauma of soldiers and features a unique "Jazz and Soul" soundtrack that contrasts with the brutal mech combat.
- The Story: The plot follows two pilots on opposite sides of the war:
- A tightly paced single-location mission centered on Io Fleming and Daryl Lorenz during the final hours of the Thunderbolt Sector conflict, blending frantic mech combat with intimate character beats and a sustained jazz soundtrack motif.
The "Thunderbolt Sector" is a shoal zone filled with colony wreckage and constant electrical discharges, making every flight a gamble against nature as well as the enemy. Technical Mastery: The film was produced by the legendary Studio 1 at mobile suit gundam thunderbolt december sky free
