Review: Microsoft Access 97 Portable

Microsoft Access 97 Portable is a time-capsule product — part productivity tool, part convenience experiment — that tries to put a full desktop database environment into a portable form. This review examines how well it succeeds at that mission, and what it feels like to use today.

2. MDAC + LibreOffice

LibreOffice Base can read Access 97 MDB files reasonably well. It is open source, safe, and runs portably via the "LibreOffice Portable" suite. The interface is different, but you can export your data to SQL or CSV. microsoft access 97 portable

While there is no official "portable" version of Microsoft Access 97 released by Microsoft, modified versions and workarounds exist that allow the software to run from removable media like USB flash drives without installation. Key Capabilities of Access 97 Portable Review: Microsoft Access 97 Portable Microsoft Access 97

Limitations

  • No native support for ACCDB (Access 2007+ format)
  • Unicode handling is limited (ANSI only)
  • Modern features like SharePoint lists or web databases absent

Overview

Microsoft Access 97 Portable is not an official Microsoft release. Instead, it’s a repackaged, “portable” version of Access 97 (part of Office 97) modified to run without installation, often from a USB drive or a hard drive folder. The goal: run on modern Windows (10/11) or older systems without touching the registry or leaving traces. No native support for ACCDB (Access 2007+ format)

4. File compatibility issues

  • Cannot open ACCDB (Access 2007+ format). Must convert to .mdb first using a newer Access version.
  • Query optimization is primitive — large joins or subqueries are extremely slow.
