First published in 1937, History of the Arabs Philip K. Hitti

  1. Pre-Islamic Arabia: The book begins with an exploration of the Arabian Peninsula before the rise of Islam, including the ancient civilizations of Yemen and the Hejaz.
  2. The Islamic Era: Hitti provides a detailed account of the life of Muhammad, the early Muslim community, and the expansion of the Islamic Empire under the Rashidun and Umayyad caliphs.
  3. The Golden Age of Islam: The author discusses the achievements of the Abbasid Caliphate, including the translation movement, the development of philosophy and science, and the growth of cities like Baghdad and Damascus.
  4. The Medieval Period: Hitti covers the Crusades, the rise of Saladin and the Ayyubid dynasty, and the impact of the Mongol invasions on the Arab world.
  5. The Modern Era: The book concludes with an overview of the Ottoman Empire, the Arab Revolt, and the modernization of the Arab world in the 20th century.

1. The "Arab" vs. "Islamic" Distinction Hitti wrote a History of the Arabs. However, critics argue that the great civilization he praises was not exclusively Arab—it was Persian, Berber, Turkish, and Syrian. The Abbasid Caliphate, which Hitti covers extensively, was heavily influenced by Persian bureaucracy and culture. Some argue Hitti over-emphasized the "Arabness" while underplaying the multicultural reality of the Ummah.

The Pre-Islamic Age: He describes pre-Islamic Arabia not as a vacuum, but as a "diverse and complex" society with rich traditions in poetry and trade that laid the groundwork for future Arab identity.
